In 1993, Cessna decided to redesign the Citation V and announced the Citation Ultra with major differences in the engines, which were the latest version of the JT15D-5D, and a standard avionics package that was upgraded to the Honeywell Primus 1000. The Cessna Citation CJ1 (also model 525) was designed as an improved version of the original CitationJet. The Cessna Citation II was the first of a series of 550 Citation aircraft, which are light corporate aircraft built by Cessna. A direct development of the Citation I, the Citation II led to the later Citation II / SP, S550 Citation S / II and Citation Bravo.
The Citation II, model 550, was a direct development of the Citation I. The success of the earlier aircraft in the market led Cessna to believe that there was a need for larger aircraft that used the same design philosophy.
